Seton Hill University’s (SHU) men’s soccer team ended last season with a 4-10-3 record, but that is not stopping Dan McCarty, head coach, from expecting great things.
“Our young team gained some experience from last season. We have put in some work this past spring to improve and the boys trained very hard over the summer months. We are very prepared to compete at a high level this season.”
“Young team” is right. The lineup might include 13 combined juniors and seniors, but the 16 freshmen and sophomores outnumber them. McCarty said those underclassmen have what it takes.
“We also have a few new additions to the line-up and our bench that will help our team win matches. We are deep, meaning that we have competition at every position and we will use our depth during the year.”
Despite the depth, McCarty said there are a few players soccer fans should keep an eye on.
Midfielder Dilveer Chaggar, a sophomore from London, England, is “a great addition to our team.” Fellow sophomore midfielder Matt Luchetti “has done great work over the summer and is in top form.”
The midfield should not hold all the attention, though. Juniors Paul Cornelius and Nick Morocco will anchor the defense while goaltender. “Jon Deluca also is back in top condition this year,” McCarty said. “We expect him to have a year like his sophomore campaign when he earned all region status.”
SHU opens the season at Shippensburg on Saturday and St. Vincent on Monday before returning home Sept. 1 against Mercyhurst.
