So here is the thing… I have no idea what I want to do for my term paper. I feel totally and completely lost. So this post will be brainstorming for me. As a Writing Center employee, I know a bajillion ways to brainstorm/pre-write but I haven’t been having any luck so I’m just going to free write in this blog a bit and try to develop some ideas.
The thing that I’m struggling with the most in this paper is making my paper connect with my digital artifact. My artifact is mostly just a compilation of knowledge. I love that I’m creating something so practical and valuable but… I don’t know how to incorporate my idea with a lengthy research paper. So here is where my mind has travelled:
Accuracy is obviously an issue and the issue has changed with new media. I honestly feel like that topic is kinda boring and overdone though.
I want to talk about something that has to do with journalism because I feel like I don’t study actual journalism as a model enough. I want to look at what is happening right now in the world of journalism. But I need a question. And I don’t have a question.
These are some interesting peer reviewed articles I found:
How Writing Style and Video Intensity Affect Cognitive Processing of Online News.
Digital Expertise in Online Journalism(and Anthropology)
Online Journalism as Market-Driven Journalism
So with those articles I could imagine a paper about online journalism and how it disseminates knowledge. Obviously online journalism has to be different than print, but how and why. What problems is online journalism causing? What is stopping online from taking over all together?
I still just don’t know what to do. I’m really struggling. Hopefully I will come back to this and expand, but for now I need a break.

One reason online journalism is not completely taking over is because it’s still challenging for online news providers to make money.
Here’s an interesting exploration of using a Wiki to do journalism…

And here are some articles that explore what happens to news in a network.

I can see your research exploring the flow of news production, and I can see your digital artifact responding to the need for accuracy, since reporters are often posting directly online, whereas in the old days editors and rewriters would look at everything a reporter wrote before it went public, so you could have news hounds who were great at shaking down stories and fact-checkers who were great at getting everything right, and they cold collaborate, while today journalists are more likely to work alone.
I’ll be happy to keep bouncing ideas back and forth.
