Guns, she was reminded then, were not for girls. They were for boys. They were invented by boys. They were invented by boys who had never gotten over their disappointment that accompanying their own orgasm there wasn't a big boom sound.

-   - Lorrie Moore, Like Life

Lorrie Moore has an impeccable sense of the intimate human portrait.  I've only recently discovered her writing (from an anthology of short stories required for one of my classes), but I am already falling in love with her style.  Her sentences have a resonance that inflicts a certain candor onto the reader, and does so in a generously humorous way.

The quote above (No offense Guys.  Admit it.  She called you out.) not only made me snicker but backtrack at its perceptivity: it's got a punch of honesty.  It's the difference between the sexes - and I absolutely believe my fiancĂ©e is one of these boys.

He owns two guns, a rifle for hunting, and a pistol to just marvel at and feel manly (I presume) because he has no real use for it.  If questioned he'll insist it's for protection, and if I allowed it he'd build an armory - in preparation for some apocalyptic, Resident Evil senario expected to unfold on our doorstep.

red shoe.JPGI understand, or can at least try to.  Just this week I purchased a pair of red, peep toe, high-heel booties (at left) I couldn't fathom not owning.  I'll hardly wear them, and considered this when I bought them.  They're not practical for manipulating the clutch in my car or strolling across the two parking lots and up the three flights of stairs to get to class each day but... I like knowing I have them in the event I would so chose to attempt it.  And when I put them on in the store, I instantly felt a little sexier.

What does that say about me?  About women?  About men?  I don't dare speak for my entire sex or stereotype all men.  Yet there is a repetitive pattern to be noticed, eh?

I think everyone can relate to the sitation, male or female. There is always that one thing that every person has that they are always buying but don't really have any use for at the time or don't especially need to spend money on at the time. For me it's books, music on itunes, and underwear lol. My boyfriend is always buying tools for no reason or something for his truck that it doesn't really need. It's different for everyone, I suppose. :)

I really enjoyed this post and I think it's so true and have to echo what Bethany said, since I believe it's something different for everyone, but anyone can relate to what you're saying. For my boy its cars, even though he has a beautiful car that I love him more for (haha) he's always looking up other ones to go look at online that are for sale in the area, just because. But like you, my weaknesses are ridiculous, but obviously sexy, shoes. :)

Thanks for the comments.

Wow, Tyler, five sisters Well, look at the advantage it's given you. You're fluent in Woman. Funny thing is I was actually referring to the clutch in my car (It's a standard). I should of said operate instead of manipulate to avoid confusion.

Bethany and Chelsea, I'm glad you could relate, and you're both right these things can be different for everyone.

And I have a few other fancies I could add to my list. (Under britches are one. Bethany gets it.) Basically, the quote made me think about the difference in tastes between guys and gals. Guys' lists tend to contain certain similarities. And the same is true for girls. So, for now I'll go with an easy reason for our differences - opposites attract. I know it's a cop out, but in my case it's true.

First of all, I've never read this author before, but I think I'm going to have to look into her. I agree that her style is rather hilarious, but also bitingly honest. You picked an excellent quote!

Secondly, isn't it ironic that although men and women have distinctly different guilty pleasures (may I call them that?), both sexes have them. Well written entry. I love the honest hilarity you used in the whole piece. Lovely ethos! You definitely have me wanting to read more!
