Why is Hard News Always Bad?

This weeks Media Lab Assignment touched upon an issue about hard news always being negative. Think about it . . Whenever you turn on the TV, and change the channel to a news station, what do you always here? Most likely a devastation of some sort in the world today. Whether it is war, or a shooting in a nearby neighborhood, there will always be something negative in the news today.

Writing for the newspaper for my high school, we always knew how to balance hard news with negative situations as well as positive. However, picking up your daily newspaper before you go to work, you would probably see a breaking story in the news today on a new issue that is going on in the world. Rarely do you see a possible event on the cover of a newspaper. Mostly likely, you would find that in a small column on the inside of the paper.

But the question is why is news always bad? I'm just waiting to see when this will change !

Paparazzi !

In the latest reading assignment for Media Lab, the text talked about how many people are unexpectedly thrown into the media. It could be a breaking story in the news about some horrific event happening in the world today. An individual who may be apart of this event immediately is thrown into a world where now their lives are no longer private. Every time they step outside of their house, they're immediately surrounded by reporters and paparazzi. They have no idea what to do, and they begin to panic. They don't know what to say, and then they accidentally say something they shouldn't have. Soon it is then on the cover of almost every magazine out.

This is probably the dilemma of many celebs, and even normal people being thrown into a situation that has now become public. However, I believe if an individual's situation is extremely personal, reporters should respect that, and give them the space they need. Unfortunately, it is the reporters job to get the details of the story in order to make their story as appealing as possible.

But when does this become too much?

The text also touches upon how children should receive special treatment from the press. I definitely agree about that. It may become too much for that child. And being bombarded by the press about an issue that is sensitive to them, may become a big issue.

All in all, many individuals may not be able to escape the gruesome experience of having their private lives made public. So how can reporters get the information they need without stepping over their boundaries?

Coming into Seton Hill University, I would have never expected to take a class called "Writing for the Internet." I really didn't know what to expect with this class. After a couple of classes went by, I began to fall in love with it. Apart of the curriculum, we had to create a blog and a Twitter account. I already had a Tumblr, as well as Twitter, so I knew what to expect. I never been in a class where I truly enjoy it. However, I'm pretty sure as the year goes by I will more in love with this class. Being able to do things that I enjoy is just like the icing on top of the cake :)

Follow me on Twitter !

There are a lot of things I have learned in this short time frame. Our class had a Wikipedia project, where we had to edit a Wikipedia page. I have always been taught to never use Wikipedia as a source. However, after knowing more about Wikipedia, I would use it as a starter to a project or paper, instead of completely disregarding the website.

Another thing I have learned is that many inspiring journalist have made their names through blogging. Nowadays, blogging is probably essential for a journalist and in his or her career. Many journalists have received a lot of exposure just because of their blogs.

Lastly, I've learned to think of ways to really catch your reader's attention with your blog posts. Having a catchy title, can attract a person into reading your blog.

VMA's : What Celebs Wore

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards premiered Sunday, September 12. This special event gives celebs the chance to show off their unique fashion styles. Among the many celebs, Lady Gaga stood out the most with her many outfits throughout the night. Her first outfit consisted of a long dress made by Alexander McQueen, designed with famous paintings on it. She topped it off with feathers on her head, which in some way resembled a peacock lol. She also turned heads with her sky-high armadillo heels she wore. I jus wonder how the heck she was able to walk in them!? Lady Gaga always knows how to push the limits, and express her personality through her style choses.

Haley Williams, Paramore lead singer, wore a Mui Mui black mini dress, with various details in the front, and paired it with nude colored pumps. Her fiery red hair completes the outfit, making her gorgeous face stand out even more.

Selena Gomez looked absolutely gorgeous in a silver, metallic dress by Reem Acra. This strapless dress, with a beautiful slit on the side gave this 18 year old teen a more grown up look without going too over-the-top. Having her hair in a side ponytail really topped off the outfit.

Justin Beiber stole the hearts of millions of fans with his performance at the VMA's. He wore all black, with a leather-man jacket detailed with his name on the back, black jeans, and a NY hat.

While on staged performing her new song, Taylor Swift looked beautiful in a cream colored vintage-styled mini dress. Her soft curls really brought out her beauty, and her bright red lips really made her lips pop.

Rihanna made a surprise appearance on stage with Eminem performing their hit song, "Love the Way You Lie." Rihanna came out on stage with a cream colored vintage ballerina skirt, with a matching belly-showing top. Her red hair really made her whole appearance pop. I'm not too sure if I like this new hairstyle on her . . .

I wonder what the celebs will wear for the 2011 VMA's?!
All I know is that Lady Gaga will definitely think of new ways to stand out from literally everyone else!

Media Lab: Anonymous Writing

This weeks Media Lab assignment touched upon the issue if it is acceptable to use anonymous sources in news writing. This is one particular section in the reading I would like to discuss because I always was taught to never use an anonymous source in Journalism writing. I was taught that if the source wants to be anonymous than the quote should not be used. However, there are still news writers who do use anonymous sources, and in many ways this may add a bit of controversy.

Many people may wonder if these anonymous sources are actually credible. Some may say if there is no other option to get the gist of the story, than anonymous writing is acceptable. I believe that there is always a way of getting a credible source, and also ways to avoid having to use an anonymous source.

This issue still lingers through news writing, and I believe that there always will be an issue with it. The main fact is to see if anonymous sources are or are not acceptable in news writing.
This fall season is quickly creeping up upon us, and sooner or later our warm and comfy cardigans will be making their way out of our closets and onto our bodies. Many designers have spent months coming up with new designs for this 2010 fall season. While looking on Teen Vogue.com, the photos from the Marc by Marc Jacobs fashion show stood out the most to me, more than any other designer listed. I would say that Marc Jacobs is one of the many fashion designers who inspire me. However, this collection really caught my eye. Jacobs uses a lot of bold patterns and stripes in this collection. There are huge oversized sweatshirts paired with colorful stripped leggings. He incorporates funky dresses, jumpers, and jackets paired with cute shorts.

This particular outfit, to the right, really caught my eye. This ready-to-wear outfit
consists of a high-waisted funky dress- pant topped with a bold patterned long-sleeved top, and paired with laced-up black trucker boots. To top off this unique outfit, he pairs it with an unusual yet chic black hat. Model, Julija Steponaviciute, makes this outfit come alive with her unique yet gorgeous look.

This particular collection does have a grunge inspired feel to it. Also it could be seen as "rocker-chic." The way Jacobs puts together each outfit makes the collection pop.

I definitely am looking forward to his next collection, and also blogging about it. So stay tuned ! :)
