Ex 2-1a: Career Research
Find an ad for a job that you would like to have when you graduate. 1) Copy or type the text of the ad into a word processor file. 2) In the same file, under the ad, include a current resume. See my resume handouts for guidelines. 3) In the same file, write a 200-word reflection on what you can do between now and the time you graduate in order to make yourself more competitive for that job. (2-1a: 10pts; Peer Review 5pts; Response 5pts)
Sobering thought of the day:
I've hired writers before; there's no shortage of people who think they can write. Judging by cover letters alone, most are wrong. --Mark J. Drozdowski

Dr. Jerz,
Would it be possible to see an example of a cover letter, or is it normally just in the form of a business letter? I have compiled many resume-like documents in the past (usually more for scholarship purposes than for a job, so your tips are extremely helpful) but I have never done a cover letter. So I feel sort of lost as to what should be in a cover letter and what it should look like.
Lorin, this stage of the assignment doesn't actually ask for a cover letter -- I wasn't planning on getting to that right away.
I don't have any examples of cover letters on my site, mostly because there is no one set form. If you read a sample cover letter that doesn't mention volunteer work, you might think "Oh my gosh, this sample letter doesn't mention volunteer work, so I shouldn't do that either!"
The form of a cover letter is, indeed, simply the format of a regular business letter. I do have a set of cover letter tips.
I did find a good set of sample cover letters at Virgina Tech, and there are also some cover letter links that look good on About.com's site.

Posted by: Lorin at February 25, 2007 11:04 PMDr. Jerz, are we suppose to upload this file on turnitin.com because I don't have a slot to upload the file into on turnitin.com for this class.
Posted by: Margaret Jones at February 27, 2007 12:19 PMcan it be an internship or does it have to be a paying job?
Posted by: Jara White at February 27, 2007 2:04 PMMaggie, I'll create the slot right away.
Jara, an internship would be fine.
Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at February 27, 2007 2:44 PMThanks Dr. Jerz!

Posted by: Jara White at February 27, 2007 4:31 PMJust wondering if the peer reviews are up yet... ?
I don't wanna miss it like I did last time and lose 10 points. That sucked.
