Jerz: Writing for the Internet (EL236)

Due: Ex 1-3 (Weblog Reviews)

  1. Find two weblogs on subjects that interest you. At least one of them should permit users to post comments.
  2. Using your chosen blogs as examples, reflect on something specific that you learned in Pane1 1-A. How do they differ from each other?
  3. Read some of the comments on your chosen blog. Post a comment to at least one blog entry.
  4. Examine the blogroll of one of your chosen blogs. Click on the links, and glance at the blogrolls of those weblogs, too. Write a brief reflection.
E-mail all URLs to me, with the subject line "YourLastName Ex 1-3".

Update: As usual, print out the exercise and hand it to me.

Suggested Blog Entry: Review one or both of your chosen blogs, drawing from what you learned in Pane1 1-A. Be sure to provide links, so your readers can see your sources for themselves. (Here's a review of my own blog. No, I don't expect your blog to be as active as mine... though I hope at least some of you get excited about blogging.)

What if the blogs we view don't have a blogroll?

Leslie... if neither of your chosen blogs has something they call a "blogroll", does either one of them have any mechanism for forming an online community? A way to subscribe to, or somehow join or share, a group of related blogs? Does the blogging service offer a centralized "recently updated" page? Can bloggers post profiles, and then search for similar profiles?

In other words, is there anything at all that serves a function similar to the blogroll?

Dr. Jerz, this may be a dumb question, but where if your office located? So I can turn in Ex 1-2 to you tomorrow...since I so brilliantly forgot about it.

For this assignment I chose two weblogs to write about. The first was found at the following URL - http://www.nyspurs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=115&PN=1.

This site is about my favourite soccer team back home they are known as Tottenham Hotspurs (or Spurs for short).

Within this weblog a set of people from New York have set up a blogging site that allows a variety of supporters to critise or praise the team for their performances and efforts. Obviously since this site is open for mainly tottenham supporters it is all orientated towards the team but supporters of other clubs are free to join the forums and critise Spurs. This is good because if there was no rivalry between soccer fans there would be no fun in soccer.
The second weblog I decided to investigate was one that reflected reviews on movies. I am a keen movie watcher and I am aware that people have opposite views about different movies.Obviously some critics have nothing but praise for a movie whereas others can only critise the small flaws which make the movie not as appealing.

The URL for this movie can be found at this address http://www.tagliners.org/archive/000900.html.
Both of these weblogs differ a great deal from what I learned in the presentations given on friday. These views are not as personal from what I seen before, they are more open to the general public and more open for critism. There is a good style to what is given out in these sites in that anyone is free to express their views as and how they want to regardless of the consequences. I think these two weblogs show a great deal about things that interest me in my life so I am obviously happy to read about them. From the previous panel I learned that weblogs were like a dairy, to me the weblogs I have chosen are more orientated to the particular subjects in matter.

I decided to post a comment to the soccer site, basically just agreeing with what people said. Everything I seen posted on the site seemed to make sense and most things were positive about the club which is always good, a few people were open for critism but that is definetely to be expected from a soccer weblog!!!

Within this weblog the blogroll has a link to many sites and forums, they include things such as NY Spurs and web updates etc.

Generally these blog rolls are to quite a high standard but I feel there could definitely be more to improve the quality of the site in a whole.
