Ex 1-2a: Informal Oral Presentation
Length: 5 min. Comparison. Prepare 2-3 handouts that demonstrate your ability to cite specific passages in the assigned readings to defend your preliminary position on an issue raised by the readings. Conclude with a statement of where you see conflicting evidence, and invite peer feedback.

I have an idea for a topic, but I don't know if I can use it. My topic is "The use of power" , I want to discuss how in The Importance of Being Earnest and Machinal how the characters are being used to widen the gap of the social class.
Posted by: Kevin Hinton at September 21, 2005 10:34 AMWhat kinds of things should be on the handouts? An outline? Supporting quotes? Visual aides?
Posted by: Lorin Schumacher at September 21, 2005 08:15 PMyea i'm not clear on the handouts either...
Posted by: Chera Pupi at September 22, 2005 03:46 PMKevin: Sounds great.
Lorin: Yes, yes, and yes. (If you like.) Whatever you feel is concrete and useful to help you get your point across.
Chera: I was deliberately open-ended. Surprise me.
Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at September 22, 2005 05:21 PMDr. Jerz, you said that we are going to split the class in half for these presentations correct? I just wanted to know how many copies of my handouts that I should make!
Posted by: Chera Pupi at September 22, 2005 07:26 PMThat's a good question, Chera.
I'd actually like everyone in the class to get handouts from everyone, so bring about 15 copies.
(If you're reading this ten minutes before class starts, and you only brought 8 copies, don't panic, you can get the rest of the copies to your peers later.)
Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at September 22, 2005 09:58 PMCan we print handouts on the front and back of a sheet to save paper (as long as it is not essential that we see the information on either side simultaneously)?
Posted by: Lorin Schumacher at September 23, 2005 01:25 AMLorin -- of course.
