"Those who brand the book racist generally do so without having considered the specific form of racial discourse to which the novel responds."

I chose this line because of what we talked about in class on Monday. Although the novel has many instances when they use language that would be considered racial toward Jim, I think that ultimately they are not portraying Jim as a horrible black person in the novel. They do not talk about him being physically hurt or beaten. Plus I think that the interaction that Huck and Jim have would be very different, had Jim's character been developed for racial purposes.
