Chapter 9 - The Elements of Journalism -

::The Pressure to Hype::

I thought this passage was humurous. "If you want to attract an audience, you could go down to a street corner, do a striptease, and get naked. You would probably attract a crowd in a hurry." ...How do newspapers and reporters keep their readers coming back for more? I have noticed however, after reading US Weekly for the millionth time, the editors only put well-known, dramatic people on the cover. Over the past several weeks Jessica Simpson has basically been on the cover of each and every US Weekly. Obviously, the editors method is working because people are buying the magazine and Simpson is repeatedly on the cover.

i agree. have you noticed its always about relationships, when it comes to celebrity mags? Are brad and angleina getting married? are jess and nick divorced yet? who's pregnant? i've noticed its mainly domestic situations that people are obsessed with. maybe its because some of us common people can relate more to relationship drama than we can to jetsetting and doing partying with paris hilton's dog. what do you think?

Erin, I couldn't agree more with you. Everytime I read a celebrity magazine, I always find relationship problems covering the ...cover! I agree when you say that the common person can relate better to a relationship rather than "hanging out with paris hilton's dog." I personally enjoy reading about relationships because one. I like the the couple and two. I have been in relationships and can, again, RELATE!

Elyse you hit it right on the nose. If the reporters got information from people the public doesnt really know, they wont read it and would probably be put off by the article.

Relationships will always exist, so they wouldn't sell without exploiting them and I like the fact that some celebrities are seen without makeup and getting a little chubby along with their boyfriends than being so inaccessible. It may annoy them but at least we feel better about ourselves.

Erin, that's a really good point. I can remember when I heard that Beyonce didn't want to lose weight and ate Pop-Eyes Chicken. Wait a minute...Beyonce? Eating fast food? (Not only does she eat it, I read in a magazine that she is a VIP member...:) ) I felt so much better about myself because if other people are not worried about being "stick thin" then why should I?
