Oooookay

Upon applying to Seton Hill as a senior in high school...

Was it ever brought to your attention there was going to be a lot of sports teams added to the school that coming year, the year in which we were to be freshmen? I remember being told about how the school embraces diversity and is expanding rapidly to keep up with its name of university in the way of sports and new buildings that were going to be constructed. Nothing that has happened here at SHU since I've arrived has really suprised me. Not the lack of building going on with the new rec center and not the smaller, almost high-school like atmosphere of living here on campus.
It may be true that guys on the baseball team are loud and mess stuff up but they aren't the only ones. They are the only guys that ever get blamed for anything being destroyed in Havey and although I do not live in that dormitory, I find it hard to believe that only baseball players are raising hell. I know that everyone always says, "not to generalize" or "not to talk smack on all baseball players" but it seems that they do it anyway time and time again. It could be stated that my view is biased but so is everyone that talks about athletes and lumps them all into one category of people. I guess I am blogging about this because I am sick of it. And by "it" I mean everyone complaining about the arrival of males on The Hill. It's being taken over by "jocks" and whatnot and that people think that the sports teams get too much credit for whatever they are involved in. I agree that sports are glorified more than they should be in high school and college, but I thought we were all big girls and boys and were gonna whine about it so much. I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but the whole athlete angle is so tired to me.
My thoughts are worn out on this right now, but I will probably add more later.

Buzzin'

Bzzz....

Time to reread Secret Life Bees. :-D I liked reading it at the beginning of freshman year, but unfortunately do not remember nearly enought details to get away without brushing up a bit.
A part of the book I remember and really like is how at the beginning of every chapter there is a quote. The quotes kind of foreshadow a bit to the looming chapter ahead of the reader.

Em

ok i'm editing my blog since i've reread the book now and we've discussed it.
I really like Melinda Leslie's blog about T.Ray and Stanley fightin each other. In response to who I think would win, I'd probably say that I think Stanley would win even though T. Ray may be physically superior in some peoples eyes. I think that Stanley's emotions would motivate him even more in a fight and perhaps give him and edge over opponents.

I also decided to link to Meghan's blog which dealt with the group discussion we had on "The Secret Life Of Bees" when Prof. Jerz was MIA. How different would life had been for Lily?
Completely different. She wouldn't have Rosaleen as a close friend or had the chance to meet the calendar sisters and Zach. Even thought Lily struggled to deal with the loss of her mother, good things came out of it eventually.

Marital Abuse and Rape

In "A Streetcar Named Desire" I observed glitches in the marriage between Stella and Stanley, which eventually led to the rape of Stella's sister Blanche by her husband Stanley. I decided to blog on abusive relationships and the growing numbers that come along with them. For some reason when I think of abuse, I register physical abuse right along with mental abuse. In this play, however I really only noticed physical abuse from Stanley. The abuse is not obvious at first. In fact, at the beginning of the play the marriage between Stanley and Stella seems almost blissful despite their less than luxurious living arrangements. The relationship is clearly very sexual and that connects the couple very strongly. But shortly after Blanche arrives, the violence becomes prevalent. Stanley, after drinking most of the evening, slaps Stella in the face because she was trying to get his poker friends to leave their two-bedroom apartment late at night.
After reading this section I thought to myself about not only abuse in marriages but rape and how it is addressed. Statistics on rape are enough to astound almost anyone. I do not mean to generalize and say that all people will be shocked by the statistics on this webpage but I thought it was fair enough to state that they are astoundingly high. Attesting to the growing number, these statistics were reported by the FBI, National Victim Center and Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, Crime and Crime Prevention Statistics along with an article for The Nursing Journal over 10 years ago so these numbers would presumably be inflated to an even higher level.
Violence in relationships is a growing problem along with drugs and obesity. This play helps to demonstrate that marital violence is not a new issue but it is growing in magnitude since the 1940's.

I've decided to edit this entry to disagree slightly with one of my peers opinions on this topic. Rebecca Villano's thoughts were of the nature that the abuse that Stella endured was a result of her own fault and his dislike of Blanche was also Stella's fault for not telling him she was coming sooner. In fact, I'm not even sure that Stella knew Blanche was coming, I didnt' think she was coming. I am of the mind that no matter what Stella did or didn't say or to do Stanley, nothing makes it her fault enough to abuse her the way Stanley did.

Whoa

How nutty...

Today, I finished reading the play, "A Streetcar Named Desire." I was confused about certain parts of it so I rented the movie and followed along with the play. Still certain sections of the book were shady to me. And another thing, the book ended COMPLETELY different from the movie. At the end of the play, it is said that Stella stays with her husband and child while Blanche is committed. At the end of the movie, Stella leaves Stanley with her child but Blanche is still committed. I hate it when they do stuff like that. This book was weird. Thoughts?

Blogging has kinda died to for me lately. It seems like i don't really have a whole lot of time to do it and i don't really have any ideas. I still like the topic and idea of blogging but I might need a more strict regimen of blogging.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light

Ain't no doubt about it....

Ever heard the song..."Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf?

Well thats what this blog is about...here's the lyrics.

The song basically details 2 youngsters in the back of a car doing what youngsters tend to do. As they are about to "go all the way tonight" the girl poses the question: Will you love me forever? Will you make me your wife? T

The song then transitions to the guy not being sure what he wants to do, he wants to "sleep on it." Of course in the end, he gives in. The third section of the song is all about the guy, now all grown up and married to this girl he promised to love for the rest of his life and he is praying for the end of time because he can't stand this girl anymore.

A good song. Whoever hasn't heard it should hear it and soon. It reminds me of a song that would be in a musical.

Now for the point of the blog. I love the song but the point of the song depresses me. The fact that this guy can't stand the woman he is married to and has been with since high school is a big downer for girls in love or girls seriously dating my age. I never want to not be happily in love or with someone I love. I may be a bit of an optimist when it comes to this, but what do you all think?

Meat Loaf had an interesting musical and movie life. Here's more on the one and only Meat Loaf.

Blood! Guts! Gore!

What do you associate these words with?

I am sure that everyone is aware of the publicity surrounding the movie "The Passion Of The Christ" and some have probably went to see it already. Actually, with the massive response this movie has created, I'm sure that more than a few people have gone to see this movie. I say this because I am one of them.

I went and saw this movie on Saturday evening and it lived up to everything that was said about the brutality that there was. The movie was intense, that is for sure. I appreciated the movie and the dipiction of events that happen during the last few hours of Jesus' life. I think that the brutality of the scourging and killing of Jesus brought life to events of the Bible and that makes people react. The pure bloodiness is enough to make a weak-stomached person sick and it makes everyone quiet as they are leaving the theater. It made me think and I think that is what was desired from this film, to make people think.

Anyone else see the movie? Thoughts?
