O'Connor, "Good Country People" -- Jerz: EL150 (Intro to Literary Study)
"Mrs. Hopewell thought of her as a child though she was thirty-two years old and highly educated"
Poor little girl who hides her rage behind
A mask of frozen ice, if only they
Could feel the outrage running through he mind.
They can't ever know what its like being her.
Intelligent where books are concerned, yet
when it comes to worldly affairs - clueless.
Taken advantage of when they first met
Innocence stolen finally fearless.

The girl is smart with books but can't judge boys
Or anyone well. She trusted boy too much.

It's NEAT, I THOUGHT, o'CONner's CHARactER
he TAKES her LEG, he STEALS her INnoCENce,
yet LEAVES her VIRginITy THERE, unTOUCHED.
Could VIRginITy BE a STATE of MIND?
(Sorry about the caps. I have a hard time hearing the stresses. You did a good job here!)

Could virginity be a state of mind?
That's a really good question there Hallie.
Isn't that true of so many people?
They have the book smarts but no common sense.
If they can't know what it's like to be her,
Can they ever really accept her for
her--what she really wants and needs?
That is all she ever really asks for.

They can't ever know what its like being her.
Too MANy SYL la BLES in THAT one LINE.
They CANnot EVer KNOW what SHE is LIKE.
They CAN'T know WHAT her LIFE is REALly LIKE.
And HALlie, SAY vir-GIN-i-TY inSTEAD.
Plus, IN-no-CENCE has ONly THREE, not FOUR.
This task is not an easy one, I know.
You both are melding thought and sound quite well.

I have to agree, he did take advantage of her
Joy always masked her rage and anger as well
I think this is quite sad
