This book willl...refute misconceptions held by English majors, such as: the fatalistic belief that all you will be able to do in the world is teach English.Lemire, I'm an English Major: Now What? (Intro & Ch 1) -- Jerz: EL150 (Intro to Literary Study)
I am so glad that someone has acknoledged this fact. When I went to an open house at a different college, I talked to two of the teachers. When I told them that I wanted to major in Creative Writing, but I didn't want to be a teacher, they told me that there was only one other option for me: to work at a book store and do poetry signings. While that would not be the worst job, it definitely is not something that I could live off of. I would not be happy. In this book (I'm an English Major--Now What?), Tim Lemire mentions all of the different job opportunities for English majors. There are so many possibilities out there that people generally do not think about. Though I already had an idea in for what I want to do with my major before I read this, it opened my eyes even more to the other possibilities. It definitely helped to ease my mind. If my current plan falls through, I now know that there are so many other jobs out there for English majors. I just have to look for them.

I agree with you Jen. So many people out there put down English majors it's almost impossible to say you are and English major without people asking me if I want to teach. It is never fun to have people bring you down because they don't necessarily know what you can do with an English degree.

I get similar reactions all the time! I just get so tired of people being prejudice against English majors. If they aren't sure what we could do with that major they should ask, not jump to conclusions!
