Ignorance may be ... bliss; but it is not a very noble goal.

This is an interesting twist on the common cliche. I think it pretty well sums up the character Vivian. It may have given her a peace of mind if she did not understand any of what the doctors were saying, but she was determined to know--she took the time to learn the medical terminology. She wanted to know exactly what was going on with her even if it was not something she wanted to hear.

You're right. She did take the time to learn. I think that's what made me admire her most.
