EL 200 Portfolio 4: On the outside looking in
The close of another semester at Seton Hill University (SHU) has bestowed upon us. This constitutes the last portfolio 4. A reflection or summary of what we, students of EL 200, absorbed throughout the semester. The economy is bad, a new president has been elected, and the world is changing at a fast pace. Media Lab students(EL 200) find those items newsworthy, hence why we, members of the the Setonian, work for the school newspaper. There is always something to write about, whether they occur on campus or off, they are all important to sources on the outside, looking in. Writers, editors, photographers, etc. share a common interest in events and stories that inform others.
I, Jeremy Barrick, have been the editor of the Setonian this semester and want to maintain the position during the next year. As the editor, I want to provide adequate material for students, faculty, and consumers off campus to read online. Issue six has just been published. This issue is the last of the Fall semester. My mentor is Kayla Sawyer, the previous editor of the Setonian Online and current news editor. The systems members of the Setonian use are MAC. If one is not used to a MAC compared to a PC, it is a difficult transition, as they are almost complete opposites.
Kayla Sawyer, a senior at SHU said, "Though Jeremy hates the slow Macs, he has shown restraint by not drop kicking them...yet," said Kayla Sawyer, the news editor.
I have also, besides publishing online content, written several articles for the Setonian, alongside working full-time at a demanding health care job and attending 15 credits at SHU.
"Jeremy has done very well with helping out the Setonian this semester. He has been able to contribute not only to his own sort of column but also picked up some in-house articles and did a great job with everything that he sumbmitted this semester. I only expect Jeremy to get better and better with newswriting as he continues here at SHU." Said Chelsea Oliver, a sophomore at SHU.
My evergreen story is near completed. I just need to put the final touches on it. The story concerns itself with the growing concern for more commuter parking at SHU. I took a commuter's standpoint in the article and interviewed a former student of SHU, current commuter students, and cited articles that related to my topic.
Going Digital discussed the cons of online content versus printed content. This article taught me that online content should be a priority. It is as important as print. The digital word reaches the same, if not more, people than a physical newspaper.
The fact that journalism has become an open sore in the public eye has given me doubts that I may not find a job out of college. The world of journalism seems to have opened up to the public as Rosales demonstrates in Chapter 5: Elements of Online Journalism.
Luckily I do not have anyone else in my department. A larger institution may have, but I was fortunate enough to work alone. The editor has many responsibilities, a lot of staff underneath them, and enough stress to make one want to explode. The position may result in oneself looking the other way, myself, on the other hand, embraced it and took it on as a challenge. Chapter 10 of the Students Newspaper Survival Guide educated would be and current editors on a how-to basis.
Students who have replied to my blog entries, agreeing with me "in my opinion(s)". Daneilla Choynowski on Chapter 5: E.O.J. and on Chapter 17: S.N.S.G. this chapter dealing with Multimedia.
Journalists inform the misinformed and uniformed one story at a time. Making the world a better place to live.
