faith

"Well, she's a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night I'll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven." Page 1 Young Goodman Brown

The she in this quote is his wife named Faith, which is obviously very symbolic.  I chose this quote because I feel as though many people live their life this way.  Many want to be dedicated to their faith, but come up empty.  This is due to always setting the goal to "after this one night".  Also, many individuals live their life full of sin because they think they can always "cling to faith's skirt." after the sins are done and over with.  Where is the line drawn?

The symbolism of Time

"It was in this apartment, also, that there stood against the western wall, a gigantic clock of ebony....." Page 5 in The Masque of the Red Death.

The author gives a detailed description of all the rooms, but Poe spends a lot of time on the ebony clock itself.  He supplies the reader with many details and then he refers to the clock throughout the whole story.  Clocks obviously tell time and time can be very symbolic in literature, especially the idea of time ticking down.  I thought Poe was trying to foreshadow that time was running out or even catching up to the individuals who were running from the Red Death.  Also, he placed this clock on the western wall, which i connected that to how the sun sets in the West which is another way of representing an end of some sort.  The clock is said to have "went out with that of the last of the gay."

The Quest of Life

"The real reason for a quest is always self knowledge." page 3 in the chapter of Every Tip is a Quest (Except When Its Not).

I enjoyed this whole paragraph that expands on this quote.  It not only relates to how authors use this in literature, but it stands true in real life situations.  Too often we get caught up in the stated reason for the quest also known as the end result or "last stop" that we end up missing out on the most important partf life, which is the journey along the way to our goals.  All of the paths we take through the journey of life are what gives us self knowledge.
