Unique Ideas

"Your novel may contain echoes or refutations of novels or poems you've never read" (Foster 189).

I thought this statement was interesting.  How many times have you thought you had the greatest, most unique idea in the world and found out that someone else had the same idea?  When I was younger, I had an idea that if I was ever granted three wishes I would just wish for more wishes.  I thought I was the only one who ever thought of this.  Turns out I wasn't.

I think that everyone has this moment when they realize that they aren't as unique as they'd like to believe. Sometimes I think something and I say to myself, "How many other people in the world are thinking of the same thing right now?" But to turn a negative into a positive, thinking how many people are going through the same things as you makes you not feel so alone.

Haha, I used to think the same thing about the wishes :)

But I like what you said about realizing you're not the only one out there with ideas. Sometimes, like Angela said, its conforting to that there are others who have been in your position, and feel the same as you do. In retrospect, I think its the opinions of others who aren't in your situation that can help you put things into perspective the most. When your in that type of a focus, sometimes other ideas are cloudy to you.

I really like that you commented about how often you think you have the best idea, only to find out that someone's already thought about that. I think that that can be both a good thing and a bad thing, because how often can someone go and say "oh you copied my idea, we're suing you for copyright infringement' or whatever it is you would sue for.

We think originally about the same ideas. I think everyone has their own ways of looking at the same ideas whether they were introduced to them by pop culture or by parental guidance. The quote states that “your novel may contain echoes” of other works not the exact ideas of other works.
