You're psycho, too.

Zoe is psycho. That's about all I can get out of the story "You're Ugly, Too" by Lorrie Moore.

Well, I can guess that she's got some reasons. She's awfully paranoid--leaving size 14 shoes outside her house to ward off intruders. How would that help anything if they decide to NOT use the door... *sigh*

The theme of death runs concurrent with her insanity. The fact that she had an ultrasound and wouldn't be around to have the results phoned to her is unnerving, considering that she later tells the story of the suicided violinist and goes to see the movie "Death by Number" (ironically, for her life may be measured in numbered steps towards death).

The fact that there are insertions of the "assessments" from her students provided throughout the story really enhances her bounding insanity. Perhaps she was not this "out of it" at one point, but what is driving Zoe to sing the soundtrack from "The King and I" in class, bring up morbid topics at inopportune times, disgustingly pick at her chin to remove a solitary hair till it bleeds, make up an ex-boyfriend that studied edelweiss, and nearly shove a man off of her sister's balcony? What could do this to a person??
