OMG, DISNEY PRINCESSES!!

Yeah... so Dr. Jerz mentioned Disney princesses and how they are all stereotyped, but I have an example one one princess that has a flaw: Belle. Now, like other princesses, she does daydream about having a different life, but never does anything about it except read. HOWEVER, after the Beast saves her from the wolves, she was going to leave him there and head home. I'm not making this up, go watch the movie if you don't believe me. As she goes to get on the saddle of her horse, she realizes that he just saved her life and takes him back to the castle. Most princesses are perfect in every way, but the fact that for a moment, Belle was acting just like anyone else (okay, maybe not everyone) makes her more human.

Oh, guess I should say something else about "Goodnight Desdemona Good Morning Juliet" huh? I realized even before Jerz said that there would be other readings that I may not end up liking. With me, it's "What the heck was this?" first then "This is why I didn't like it..." later. It's a process.

I was thinking about Belle too!!! I know exactly what your talking about because this was one of my favorites, second only to the always awesome Little Mermaid! I agree that Belle was probably the most down to earth princess out of them all :) Good thinking!

When Mrs. Jerz was still Miss Gigliotti, I took her to Beauty and the Beast on a date, and scored big points when I noted that Belle also has brown hair and brown eyes.

Then, on the way out of the theater, she saw the movie poster, and froze stock still -- the movie poster gave Belle green eyes.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, so sooner or later I had to pick up on some things. lol

Artists tend to screw stuff up like that. In a movie, something will be one color, but then on a poster or merchandise, it's different. I've had arguments with friends over stuff like that. lol

Heh, good example. I just kept thinking, "Wow, I want to read some of the original fairy tales. Creepy." Belle is one of the more flawed characters, and I think that makes her more loveable, as is often the case.
That reminds me, I wanted to ask you in class, why did you find Constance annoying? I definitely was against the eating of Velveeta cheese straight from the box (gross), but aside from that, she didn't bother me too much.

I thought Constance was kind of a ditz and kinda passive. I know she changes at the end, but she still annoyed me.

Well, I must be pretty flawed because I have brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyways, I cannot believe that they actually gave Belle green eyes! Even if it was a mistake, it's still pretty shocking.

You are right Kayla, Belle is very down to earth. She was even portrayed as a nerd in this movie for wanting to read books. This stereotype makes it very easy for everyone to relate to her.

Yeah, anytime I take those "Which Disney princess are you?" quizzes, I always get Belle because I like to read. lol

Kayla, Belle has and will always be my favorite princess. It's not only because she loves to read, too. She was less passive and more self-sacrificing then the other princesses. Here's a point, though- Belle still eventually went back to a man. This has always bothered me for some reason...

I'm going to count Kiara (Simba's daughter) as a Disney Princess for this. I mean, Simba is the King of Pride Rock... so Kiara must be the princess.

Lion King 2 is like a happy version of Romeo and Juliet. No, really, it was based on the good ol' play. This is an excellent essay showing the similarities between Lion King 2/Romeo and Juliet, and Lion King/Hamlet.

Anyways, Kiara is also a Disney princess that is willing to go for what she wants. She doesn't just wait around for Kovu to come find her. They meet by chance, are separated by their parents, and meet again as he sets out to destroy her father. However, they fall in love, and even after Simba banishes Kovu (at which point I must tell you there is a catchy song with some awesome diva zebras and giraffes), Kiara refuses to just accept her dad's decision for her. She goes and seeks out Kovu, and they eventually bring together the two feuding prides. Not only did she get the man, but she saved her pride! AND almost sacrificed herself to save the enemy leader, Zira. It was a beautiful film.
