Bernice's Transformation...

One of my initial responses was that Bernice should have went home when she was ahead. If she would have went home when first presented with the idea, what was left of her confidence would have remained, she would have kept her hair, and maybe even had a more fulfilling break.

However, my ideas about this changed upon further thoughts. During class we discussed how Bernice was the round character and progressed the most in this story. It was mentioned how she transformed twice throughout the timeline of events. While she did change twice throughout the story I would like to point out that she didnt back track. Her transformations were new and moving on. She didnt simply transform to adapt to Marjories society, realize that it wasnt working and then transform back into her former self, which I know many people would have done, due to the fear of being away from their "comfort zone". She transformed farther into her adulthood. I think she gained some knowledge and wisdom in her final transition that she would have never gained having given up and returning home early as mentioned. Besides that Bernice will never have to plague herself with the thoughts of "What ifs..." and "I wonder what would have happened if..." Bernice gains a lot of character throughout these events.

Justification 2 Murder

Glaspell, ''Trifles'' (1916) -- Jerz: American Lit II (EL 267)

As it was mentioned in class to create an arguement between our morals, what if it wasnt a canary that was killed, instead it was a cricket... maybe a baby... or maybe a mouse...
If indeed Mr. Wright killed the (fill in the blank) does that automatically give Mrs. Wright the excuse to kill him in return?
I mean I am an animal lover like no other and my pets live better than some maybe even most people... but say my boyfriend killed my ferret I dont think I would used that as justification for his murder.
Two wrongs dont make it right is a popular phrase that my mother would frequently say when i would blame someone else for my actions... Lets just go ahead and say that Mr. Wright killed a baby instead of the canary... and Mrs. Wright killed him in return... In our legal systems she would still get charged with murder just as he would. In our society a mans life is the ultimate cost. We dont have an eye-for-an-eye society. It isnt justified that because he took a life, his get taken also...
Back to the canary situation....
Although I say this now, if my chance something like this did happen to one of my pets I might be temporarily insane and react in Mrs. Wrights nature... I think it one of those situations where you cant correctly answer the question unil you are placed in it. It is also impossible to come to a final answer when no one in the story knows what went on behinnd the Wrights closed doors...

Matt Hampton presented the idea that maybe we all have the wrong idea and Mrs. Wright was the crazy one who casued all these events. I think that this is a very possible explanation and that it would add a completely different twist on the play and how everything was interpreted. But once again as I stated above no one knows what went on behind the Wrights close doors, and it is thought that they were always in that state...

9-11... My 2 year anniversary...

In Lehman's poem about the World Trade Center he states that he never liked the building and that it was an fine axample of what is wrong with American archetecture... Then towards the end he states that overnight his opinion of the building changed. He began to appreciate that way that it looked when coming from certain directions...

I think that this poem shows what happens to many people when they overlook small things in their lives... "You never realize what you had until its gone..." kinda thought... When all was peaceful before the ideas and worries of terrorism and 9-11 happened the building was looked at as an eyesore. Then after 9-11 people realized that even though it wasnt the prettiest building that they felt a connection to it... I think some New Yorkers even looked at it as if it was theirs... As if someone just wrecked their car, people were upset that terrorist had just ruined their building along with killing MANY MANY innocent people...
