Mystery House frustrating

This game would be very frustrating having to go through anf type each command out. Also it seems as though you really have to take this game one step at a time. As it first showed you could not say enter house. You have to say climb steps for the game to really begin. I am an impatient gamer and this would be a very annoying game that I would stop playing after a few minutes. I am not a fan of any style games such as Mystery House, strictly because I feel as though this game requires you to do every little thing such as climb the steps instead of just entering the house. Games like this would cause me a great deal of stress and frustration and cause me to give up very early.

Yes, the frustration factor is an important part of this kind of game, which has elements of crossword puzzles (where your goal is to find the exact word). Later text games were much more forgiving, in terms of accepting more synonyms.

We are going to spend a little more time on this genre, Keith, since I think it's important to develop some skills for how to study a game when the gameplay doesn't come naturally to the researcher.

Once you find the right "key" words, the game play might become easier over type, and entering the text commands for walking up the stairs becomes second nature.

It definitely takes some getting used to. In EL 236-Writing for the Internet, Dr. Jerz introduced our class to IF games and text-based video games. They're quite similar. Think back to Strongbad's spoof of Dungeonman. It's basically the same thing. It's really frustrating when you say "view bookcase" and the computer responds "That command is unrecognizable," because it's programed to only accept "look at bookcase." Like I said, once you know the basics, it's a lot easier, but definitely frustrating nonetheless.
