Naming a Reading Blog

| | Comments (2)

I intend for this blog to be about the topic of reading--primarily developmental reading at the postsecondary level.  In it, I hope to review scholarship on the topic, scan community college blogs and journals, and record classroom experiments.  But what's a cool title for a reading blog?  My esteemed colleagues have already taken some of the great names: Dr. Michael Arnzen created Pedablogue, and Dr. Dennis Jerz has Jerz's literacy weblog.  Is it better to do something cute, like Reading is FUNdamental (which is also taken) or just go with simple and descriptive, like "Developmental Reading" or "Postsecondary Reading"?

I'd like to check out other developmental reading blogs to get ideas, but I can't find any . . . shocking in light of the fact that approximately 87,000 new web pages have been created while I've been composing this entry (see Reeves library's cool video on information literacy for more information on this topic).

The Naming of Blogs is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a blog must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

With apologies to T.S. Eliot.

I started calling my blog just "literacy weblog" but then someone else started blogging with the title "Information literacy weblog," so that every time I wanted to search for references to my blog, I had to sort through references to that other blog (which is actually a pretty good blog).

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably try to come up with a unique name (as Mike did with Pedablogue). Even if you don't go the neologism route, it will be easier to find references to your particular blog if it has a unique name. This is important because sometimes people who are responding to your blog won't actually post their response on your blog -- they will post it on their own blog.

The content in your blog, and the words you use in the titles and body of each of your individual blog posts, will start attracting readers through search engines. So you can try to put words like "reading" or "literacy" in the titles of your individual blog entries (as you have done with this one).
