Cover Entry 4

News Writing Blog Portfolio 4

This is the fourth installment of my Blog Portfolio for 2005 Fall Semester: EL277 News Writing. For those of you that did not follow my Blog the prior to now I will give you a brief exposition about me. My name is Leslie Rodriguez and welcome to my weblog sponsored by Movable Type. I am a sophomore at Seton Hill University and as part of my EL 227 class and the New Media Journalism program I write and respond with blog entries on various topics.

These entries are then posted for public view on my blog. This entry acts as an introduction to my blog portfolio which includes selected entries that reflect on our in class discussions, published news articles and various texts that Dr.Jerz has assigned. The following topics will be examined and discussed in my blog portfolio:

The Collection
My best blog entries that demonstrate intellectual growth.
Entries are categorized accordingly.

Class Required Blog Topics (including the texts):
Coverage 1: This blog includes my first reactions to the book We the Media which was my favorite book we read all year regarding journalism. I discuss the introduction and call out the greatest enemy of journalism...CORPORATE JOURNALISM! (supposed to be bold and scary).

Coverage 2: This is an entry that regards the rules of public life in relation to the media as well as the spread of information on an open source forum such as the world wide web. The sources are from We the Media chapter three. Hacking, and password decryption are some interesting sidenotes from this blog as well as a good story about scamming Pepsi Cola Company.

Coverage 3: In this entry I discuss in depth chapter five of We the Media and cover a variety of topics. Specifically blogs and politics are mentioned in this section of the reading. I wrote about the impact that blogs had on Howard Dean's election campaign.

Depth 1: This is a very elaborate blog in which I talk about chapter one and two of We the Media. Interesting points are made about the evolution of the craft [journalism] from Tom Paine to Blogs. I also discuss history and blogging; an example being 9-11.

Depth 2/Discussion 2/Timeliness 1/:
This entry coincides with my informal oral presentation on chapter 6 of We the Media. The presentation generated quite a buzz shortly after it was given. A very long and in depth comment conversation began from Evan Reynolds and was maintained by Dr.Jerz and me. The definition of journalism is questioned...Oooo..ahhhh...check it out, it's pretty deep.

Depth 3/Timeliness 2: This entry refers to chapters eight and nine of We the Media which deal largely with proposed laws and codes of cyberspace and the technological world. I am not sure "laws" is the correct term for them. Most of them are generalizations based upon opinion and analysis of the natural progression of technology.

Discussion 1/Interaction 2: After Jenna O'Brocto's in class presentation of chapter 4 of We the Media I blogged a reflection on what she talked about. One point she made was that more and more celebrities have blogs now. Me, Dr. Jerz and Jenna all commented on the use of blogs for business purposes.

Comment Grande/Comment Informative: I left several large comments on this blog entry that was viewed by Dr.Jerz and Evan Reynolds. Contemplation and discussion commenced and we determined that context matters when writing things online as truth or propaganda. Also mentioned was the idea that corrections to someone's online work/writing are very different than personal attacks.

Comment Primo: I was the first to comment on Elyse Branam's blog entry about chapters 3-5 of We the Media.

Link Gracious 1: In this post I mentioned a link to Chera Pupi's blog and her presentation on chapter seven of We the Media. Chera spoke in her presentation about the role of citizen journalists and their importance in society in order to be fair when making news. There is also some debate about the first amendment and its role on the internet as far as publishing is concerned.

Other Entries:
Wildcard: This was a really cool site that I found where you can make your own pets and adopt them. I made a penguin named Hubie and when you click on the ice-berg he shakes and eventually falls into the water. A cruel way to treat a penguin (JK) but I found it amusing.

Wildcard 2: This entry is my own personal review of the new move Rent. Idinia Menzel, Rosario Dawson and Jesse L. Martin truly do this movie so much justice.
