Thoreau-Walden Chapter 18
“TO THE SICK the doctors wisely recommended change of air and scenery. Thank Heaven, here is not all the world. The buckeye does not grow in New England, and the mocking bird is rarely heard here.”
Here Thoreau is saying, the doctors of his time didn’t really know how or what to prescribe to his people, so they just said “get out of this area. Go exploring or something.” I don’t think it’s really changed that much since then. Nowadays, sure doctors of medicine can say “well…here’s some Prozac, take two and call me in the morning.” They still rely on, “well maybe some fresh air, a change of scenery, and a new wife will do you some good.” Why though? Why not change this method? Because, it’s easier to see that in today’s society, more and more people just need to get away from the smog and the pollution and into cleaner air.
