A Roman Catholic civil rights group called off a boycott of Wal-Mart on Friday after the world's largest retailer apologized for an employee's e-mail that called Christmas a mix of world religions.
"We only trigger boycotts when we've been grossly offended," Donahue said.
Offend? At what you pea-brained nimrod!? For the guy telling the truth!? BTW, if you want to know what 1 FORMER Employee said here it is:
Kirby wrote that Christmas resulted from traditions ranging from Siberian shamanism to Visigoth calendars.."Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses (sic), mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world," Kirby wrote
Here's why he wrote that email:
a customer-service employee named Kirby had written an inappropriate e-mail to a woman who complained that the retailer had replaced a "Merry Christmas" greeting with "Happy Holidays."
Kirby was right. I am not saying his actions within the company were right, I am saying the reason why people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas was right.
Catholics of the world, if you're going to have a reason to boycott Wal-Mart, go back to the orginial reason: Because you thought Sam Walton was the Antichrist.
If I had a nickel for everytime a catholic said he/she was "offended" by something--I'd be rich. The world would also be a more boring place.
To the Catholics of the world: GET ALIFE!

And it's not just one group. You know what if someone wants to sue me for my thoughts and my writings, then let them. If someone at SHU feels like I'm a trouble-maker because I exercise my first amendment right, let them. The only people that have problems with what I say are people that have nothing better to do than criticize free-thinkers (not saying you are one of those types of people btw.)
If Dr. Jerz has a problem with what I say, let him address it. If Father Honeygosky or Sr. Lois has a problem, let them address it to me. Last I check Father Honeygosky already knew where I stood about the Catholic church in 2005.
As for Sam Walton, he was a GREAT man! He took Corporate American and made it into "We Care, America." He was one of the first men to give part time workers health care, and stock options. Truck drivers became rich when they retired because he gave THEM stock options if they drove a Wal-Mart truck. When I said that, it was because I was reading an article that said, and I quote "Many Catholics thought Sam Walton was the Antichrist."
I am not going to quit saying what I say because a few Catholics, or a few people don't like what I say.
Last I checked we live in the United States of America, not Iran, not N. Korea or China. But the good old US of A!
Posted by: Lou Gagliardi at November 12, 2005 12:02 PMWow... so a very important part of this story is that poor Kirby apparently got fired for telling the truth! And, I don't know if you checked out the comments about the article, but if you feel like saying "Oh my!" I'd definitely advocate reading those.

well, this line makes me laugh: "if you're going to have a reason to boycott Wal-Mart, go back to the orginial reason: Because you thought Sam Walton was the Antichrist."
however... i wonder if the Catholic bashing is just a good idea.
I mean, it's just perpertrating stereotypes which, in the long run, hurt everyone. I mean, I'm sure there are asshole Protestants and jerkface Buddhists as well as there are bad Catholics. Maybe the problem isn't the religion aspect of why people are doing what they do... in a way, you are taking one group of renegade Catholics and generalizing their actions to include the entire Catholic religion.
I can understand why you blogged about this because it is ridiculous, but I worry, Lou, that you are only making trouble for yourself.
What if you looked at this event this way: someone boycotted Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart responded. Therefore, if some other group chose to boycott Wal-Mart, perhaps Wal-Mart will respond to *real* issues as opposed to surface-level cosmetic factors. Or perhaps not.
By the way... did you know Sam Walton? Maybe he was a nice guy!
The problem isn't necessarily Wal-Mart (though I hate the place as much as the next person) but rather the power that corporations such as Wal-Mart have in America. How can Americans address that issue?
You wrote: "If I had a nickel for everytime a catholic said he/she was "offended" by something--I'd be rich."
Here again, a generalization but something to keep in mind: When this group was offended, it did something. Sometimes, I feel offended by the fact that a dead dude on a stick haunts me everywhere I go. Other times, I feel offended by 8 a.m. telemarketer phone calls. Maybe the trick is to ACT on what offends us in an effort to change it. (Advice I and just about everyone else would do well to follow!)
Lou, you have such passion! It's an absolutely admirable quality. I would just like to see you turn your complaints into actions... what can I do about your issue to fix it? That would be cool.
