Prufrock, in this poem we see his weakness in taking actions through social engagments. We also see him describing how he strolls through the streets and watching men hanging out their windows. Meanwhile, we see him thinking about several women "arms and perfume" ..but his social nervousness interfered. Overall, Prufrock was a worrier, he always wondered how people would see him as or what kind of person he was. He was always afraid of getting old and would sit by the beach dreaming up mermaids singing and swimming. Overall, i really enjoyed this poem and thought it was romantic.
Posted by MelissaBerg at February 22, 2005 11:57 PM | TrackBackSo you're attracted to Prufrock's romantic tendencies... does the fact that he's pretty much a HOPELESS romantic make any difference?
What do you think is the burning question that he can't bear to ask?
Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at February 24, 2005 12:05 AMI do not see this poem as romantic at all. I do not even see it as a love story. I just thought about him talking about getting old throughout the whole story and found no love in it, but I did not see it as him being a worrier, afraid to get old. I think he realized he was getting old and was just describing it.

Are you saying that there is something wrong with being a "hopeless" romantic? Because if you are then I think you and I need to have a littl chat. :-) In all seriousness, to answer your question I think that he is trying just to ask a person to coffee. As I mentioned in my blog entry on this subject, it seems that he is journaling, trying to build up the courage.
I think that a lot of guys today could take a lesson or two from Mr. Prufrock. If you never ask you will never know the answer. What do you think?
Posted by: Tiffany at March 2, 2005 04:03 PMOh, Tiff, you're so right... Lots of guys could take something away from Prufrock's romantic tendencies; however, he seems sort of like a stalker and I don't think ANYONE needs that!
Stephanie says she thinks it's just about a guy getting old. Well, why is he lamenting about getting old? Personally, I think that it is because his love interest won't look twice at some ancient gezer.
