Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine - 1989 TVT 10.0/10.0
Well, there is some "New" NIN album out, but like.. I haven't bought it yet, probably won't either. Funny how I have every "Halo," but don't care about the new cd, at all. Eh.. I'm old and grumpy, I suspose.. I remember when Pretty Hate Machine was brand new, getting airplay on WXXP (not "the X," dumbass.. but Pgh.'s ORIGINAL "alternative/post-modern" radio station.. something like 1510 AM. Yep, I was a black-clad art rat high-school senior that could care less about anything asides from Bonkers, chicks, skateboarding and the other random crap we did back in the day. Let's skip school and go to Eides.... put in that NIN tape again, hey.. Lonnie dropped his cigarette on your back seat again..
So anyways, I can't really review this, without any kind of sentimental vibe. I've been listening to this album for about 16 years now. All I can really say, is if you don't have it, I don't know what to tell you. I'll never really be able to relate to you. Sure, I'll be cordial, but still posess a secret loathing at your collection, for not having at least a TDK dub of this album, somewhere.
I guess this album is like.. a right of passage, a religious experience or something. I can't imagine how many situations in which I have lived that this album was not not a part of, or at least desired to be as such. My battered copy currently is about 15 years old, after I wore out 2 cassettes. I know this cd, inside and out.. from the first tribal bits of "Head Like A Hole," to that scratchy ending of "Ringfinger."
Perfect in every way.. if you don't have it, repent and purchase.

Posted by MichaelSichok at May 18, 2005 12:24 AMSo, after IMing with you earlier I figured I should check out your blog once again... and you are causing me to feel like Annie Potts in Pretty in Pink again. First... Pretty Hate Machine... WOW, How I loved 'Down in it', that was always my favorite, I don't know why.. but it was, in fact I think I will listen to it right now.
What's more... you made me recall sitting on the steps of Bonkers, waiting for it to open, Dennis and Lonnie were present and we were all saying something to the effect of "HELP, I've fallen and I can't get up" Memories.. I guess I shouldn't quote Barbara Strisand(sp?) right now...
I made a very bad mistake a few years back: I was desperately in need of rent money and scouring my house for items to sell on ebay. In a moment of temporary insanity, I sold my NIN collection. I had everything, man. All the halos, a shit tonne of imported stuff... all sold for $250 on ebay. I have regretted that decision many, many times.
Luckily, I was at my friend's house this weekend and he has mp3s of everything NIN, including the new album (which I must tell you is a LOT better than the last album and slightly more remniscent of PHM, the best album ever).
I was obsessed with NIN in high school, OBSESSED to the point that I had (and still have) a shrine to Trent Reznor in my bedroom at my parent's house. I've long since gotten over the obsession (but, believe me, if I run into Mr. Reznor at an airport somewhere, I'll be gushing) but I haven't quite had the heart to dismantle the shrine.
Anyway, I agree that PHM is a rite of passage (or something)! ;c) ahhh... the days of yore...
