Free

Treadwell, Machinal (Finish) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Young Woman: He has wings but he isn't free! I've been free, Father! For one moment- down here on earth- I have been free! When I did what I was free! Free and not afraid! How is that Father? How can that be?

This is the part of the play for me, when I realized what she wanted. I think she wanted freedom from her relationship with her husband. she wanted to be free to love someone and be in love. She wanted to be free of this relationship of what seemed like lies. Even her talk of angels is kind of a foreshadowing of her "flying free".
then again, Quien Sabe!

I believe that same thing, Rachel. I think at that particular part of Machinal, ahe realizes THAT was the goal she was aiming for.
