Glass Menagerie scenes 1- 5

Williams, The Glass Menagerie (Scenes 1-5) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Amanda: You are the only young man that I know of who ignores the fact that the future becomes the present, the present the past, and th past turns into everlasting regret if you dont plan for it!

I feel that this line shows how much Amanda wants to live through her children. You can tell that these words at one time applied to her by the way she tells them. Also all the comments she makes about her husband point to her not being in love with him when they were married

I can see where you're coming from. A lot of women at the time saw this as their only means of living a good life. Look at Machinal, for example, the young woman's mother always needed the support of her daughter. Same time period...Same results

I this "living through her children" is typical of some parents, even today.
