Professor Bernardhi

Schnitzler, Professor Bernardhi Acts 1-3 -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Professor Bernhardi : If you began to think of all the illnesses that lie in wait for people who, so to speak, dont live long enough to die of them, you might lose your faith in Providence.

This is quite a confusing play for me, I cannot pick out a plot from it. I just get a bunch of doctors waxing intellectual. I did find this line to be very clever. It seems to me that Dr. Bernhardi is saying not to take certain parts of his medical profession too seriously. That is kind of disturbing to her coming from a doctor. It is a kind of relief to thier job.
