Death of a Salesman Act 1

Miller, Death of a Salesman -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Willy: Bernard is not well liked, is he?

Biff: He's liked, but he's not well liked.

Willy: That's just what I mean. Bernard can get the best marks in school, y'understand, but when he gets out in the business world, y'understand, you are goin to be five times ahead of him. Be liked and you'll never want.

I read Death of a Salesman when i was a junior in highschool. My memory of it is a little bad but i do remember one thing about Willy. He had an obsession with being a well liked person. He doesnt feel he is well liked in his business and it discourages him so he wants Biff and Happy to be well liked so they make it. Later in act 1 you can see that this "well liked" thing is just something he was searching for from his brother and father, the people who abandoned Willy to begin with.
