Shopping well at SHU11/20/06

Graduation is just around the corner for some seniors. The feeling is mushy, bittersweet. Every now and then, the graduate is overwhelmed by memories, and wants something tangible with which to remember their time at Seton Hill University (SHU). Whether it is a tee-shirt, a window cling or a pennant, there seems to be only one place to buy that special item: the campus bookstore.

The same seems true for teams and clubs who wish to purchase tee-shirts, hats and other items that say SHU, Seton Hill University or have the grinning Griffin on them.
However, with tee-shirts running around $15.95 each, according to online estimates, buying one seems costly enough, but 20 or 30 for a team?

Journalists crave completion. A full story, which answers the what, when, where, how and who of an event, is the goal. For the common good of a community - be it for the entire world or a university campus - journalists are taught to tell the truth, and as much of it as possible.

For the past three and a half years, I have reported on events pertaining to Seton Hill University (SHU), and for the same amount of time, I have strived to tell the truth in its entirety. I have succeeded. I have failed. I have never been complete.

Holocaust survivor shares his story with SHU students10/12/06

Many Holocaust survivors never tell their stories. The record of their time at the hands of Nazi oppressors remain locked in a vault that is never opened. Others, however, pick open what lies deep inside to tell the truth of the suffering and death. Robert Mendler, 81, of Latrobe, is one of those survivors.

His story not only tells the horrors of the Holocaust, but what happens after the history book closes.

Old dogs ineligible for new tricks10/12/06

When growing up in a two or more child household, sometimes being the oldest can be disappointing. Watching younger siblings receive newer and better toys makes first-borns wonder, Why didnt I get that? or Why wasnt that thought about when I was that age?

Similarly, Seton Hill University (SHU) upperclassmen have had to endure watching their new peers qualify for certain opportunities that were not available during their own freshman year.

If the SHU fits...09/22/06

...wear it-or bear it?

A shoe begins roomy. One walks around like a duck for a while, getting used to the extra space; but slowly the foot starts to fit, and the shoe comes into its own, adjusting to the needs of the wearer.

Then the day comes - usually when everything is broken in perfectly, and the scuffs are sweet memories of places one has traveled - that the shoe doesnt fit anymore. Even tying up the laces is a challenge. A new home for ones toes must be found in a bigger, sometimes flashier version of the original.

SHU students lend a hand in chapel cleaning09/19/06

Instead of priests wearing robes and holding chalices, college students wearing jeans and tee shirts held mops and brooms. Instead of incense and candles, the smell of Pine-Sol and Murphys Oil Soap emanated from St. Josephs Chapel on September 16, 2006.

Among the workforce of around 90 people that signed up to take part in Labor of Love, a service project sponsored by Seton Hill Universitys Office of Campus Ministry, 11 students decided to take part in the cleaning of St. Josephs Chapel.
