This one definately didn't make any sense to me. I Couldn't understand how it ended with the fther fireing the hired hand as the only thing he did. didn't he feel bad for what he did to his children. Didn't his wife care that she was so rude to the boys. why didn't anyone make sure they had blankets. This just shows that people were doing wrong with their children a lot longer than the system that holds them accountable was around for.
Posted by TammyRoberts at April 28, 2005 06:30 AMTammy, you've got a grip on some elements of the story. But just to offer another point of view, how about looking at these stories as glorified folklore without the usual happy ending. I mentioned Hansel and Gretel in the class, which is a childrens tale about two kids trying to find their way home. But the stepmother is more of an obstacle than they had bargained for. You're right about people being able to get away with doing wrong, but what exactly is the "system" here? Just food for thought.
