Math for Journalists

I’ll be completely honest I don’t like math. I use to love math until I had to take Pre-Calculus in high school and ever since then I have hated math. That is one of the reason I picked Communication when I was declaring a major.

Dr. Jerz gave us three different examples:

  • I ate half as many donuts in 2015 as in 2016
  • In 2016, there was a 200% increase in the number of donuts I ate.
  • There was a 50% decrease in the number of donuts I ate in 2015 as compared to 2016

The first statement is good because it doesn’t use actual number. The second statement is fine but I personally think that 200% is a huge scary number. The third statement needs to include a number of how many donuts there was in 2015.

I found the Khan Academy videos very helpful for the math subjects. I thought they were a good refresher video.
