In Urinetown (script):

This script confused me a bit. I can understand there is humor that can be accessed with little effort just through the name alone the actual story line was very “out there” for me. However, I did find political references within the script; the main “bad guy” throughout the play stuck out to me as an almost dictator figure putting so many rules and regulations into affect. As always, when there is a dictator some sort of rebellion has to arise from somewhere and of course it has to be with the boy his daughter likes. That’s just how shows go. Dramatic problems with tragic solutions packed together with songs to express their feelings. Although, the rebellion is not completely unjustified; The price to pee in the public bathrooms have been raised and it is becoming difficult to afford. The ending is the saddest/most frustrating part; yes, they in and can all pee free again after Bobby is thrown off of a roof and Hope (the daughter) becomes the leader of the rebellion, but then they run out of water and inevitably die.
